Where We Are — Between Sea, Forest and the Kei Islands

Manoa rises from sand and silence in Ohoidertawun, a sacred coastal village on Kei Kecil, in the far southeast of the Moluccas. The property stands where the Kei people have always lived — with the forest at its back and the sea at its feet — within a territory whose customs and boundaries remain protected by the village, its Patti and the living principles of adat.

Manoa is around 15 minutes from the small town of Langgur and 35 minutes from the airport — close enough to reach easily, yet far enough to feel truly away.

The Architecture and Grounds

Manoa is a collection of four handcrafted island houses, each with its own architecture, materials and atmosphere. Rooted in Austronesian traditions, their design also carries echoes of the Swahili coast and the wider Indian Ocean world: carved wood, arches, woven fibres, natural stone, shaded verandas and rooms that remain open to the gardens, the sea and the changing light.

These are not uniform hotel buildings, but individual houses shaped by artisans, collected objects and materials chosen for their character. Together, they form a singular architectural landscape between forest and shore, at the gateway to the Pacific.

At the heart of the property, a seawater swimming pool blends naturally into the gardens. Surrounded by sunbeds and shaded corners, it catches the afternoon light and offers a quiet place to cool down, rest and look out toward the sea.

Nearby, the communal restaurant welcomes guests around a large shared table or at more intimate tables of their own. Hammocks, terraces, garden corners and several shaded common areas create places to read, meet, eat or simply let the day slow down.

A Family Home in a Living Village

Manoa is run in the spirit of a home. Our warm and attentive team comes from across eastern Indonesia, from Papua to the Aru Islands, and looks after guests with a made-to-measure approach: meals, excursions and moments shaped around individual tastes, always with respect for the traditions and spirit of the place.

Ohoidertawun is not a backdrop, but a living community that continues to preserve its ceremonies, music and relationship with the land and sea. Traditional gatherings and cultural events may be arranged on request, offering a genuine introduction to the living culture of Kei.

To stay at Manoa is to enter this place as a guest — welcomed by its people, within a territory that remains, in every sense, theirs.

A Coast Shaped by Tide and Time

Seen from above, Manoa appears as a handful of red roofs set within a wide sweep of green, bordered by a coastline that continuously changes shape with the tide.

As the sea withdraws, a vast stretch of white sand emerges and extends for hundreds of metres, creating a shifting shoreline that can be explored on foot before the water slowly returns.

Above the shore, ancient red-ochre paintings still mark the limestone cliffs. They are traces of people who lived along this coast long before the present village was established, and form part of the deeper history of the landscape.

Life at Manoa

Manoa is a quiet island home between the forest and the sea — a place to slow down, swim, read, share a meal or simply do nothing.

Its architecture is one of the first things guests notice: a collection of houses with distinct identities, shaped by local materials, travel memories and a deep attention to detail. Nothing is designed to imitate a conventional resort. The beauty lies in the balance between simplicity and character — old wood, open spaces, handcrafted objects, sea-facing terraces, gardens, shadows and changing light.

Life here follows the rhythm of the tides. Mornings begin with the animals, the garden, the sound of the sea and breakfast facing the water. During the day, guests move naturally between the seawater pool, hammocks, shaded terraces, quiet corners and the long table where meals are shared. Privacy is always possible, but so are conversation, laughter and unexpected encounters.

Manoa stands beside one of the largest traditional meti areas in Kei, where the sea retreats across a vast coastal landscape and reveals another world of reefs, sand, seagrass and marine life. The tide shapes the view, the activities and the daily rhythm of the people who live along this coast.

The house is also a starting point for journeys beyond the usual routes. We help guests shape tailor-made explorations according to the season, the weather, the sea and the people available to welcome them — from forest walks, fishing and freediving to village visits, island hopping, hidden waterfalls and overnight expeditions across Kei Besar, Kur and the more remote parts of the archipelago.

But the heart of Manoa is its team. Most have never worked in large resorts or been trained in the polished codes of the so-called modern hospitality world. What they offer is something harder to teach: warmth, generosity, intuition, humour and a sincere desire to make people feel at home. Their hospitality comes from the heart, from family traditions and from the natural way guests are welcomed in the islands.

They also take real pleasure in turning an ordinary evening into a celebration. Birthdays, departures, reunions and spontaneous occasions may suddenly become a shared dinner, a decorated table, music, laughter and a cake improvised by the kitchen. These moments are rarely formal or planned far in advance; they grow naturally from the team’s generosity and their joy in bringing people together.

Animals are part of this everyday life, as are cooks, fishermen, musicians, craftspeople, guides, neighbours, friends and families from across Kei. Cultural gatherings sometimes grow naturally from these relationships, around traditional music, food, craftsmanship, stories and living knowledge.

More than a place to stay, Manoa is an invitation into Kei — through its architecture, its sea, its people and the quiet richness of a life that has not been standardised.
